Melanie Joan Bancroft Sharpsteen, 84, passed away peacefully in her home in Stuart, Florida, on October 5, 2025. She was born on May 8, 1941, in Groton, New York, the daughter of the late Mortimer J. Bancroft and Margret E. (Watrous) Bancroft.
In addition to her parents, Melanie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward R. Sharpsteen; her sister, Linda Drummond; and her brother, Martin Bancroft.
Melanie is survived by her children: Julianne Rieks, Joseph J. Rieks (Tracey), Sheila D. Carroll (Aurther), and Joan M. Weir (Brian); and her stepson, William R. Sharpsteen. She is also survived by her brother, Joel Bancroft, and her aunt, Viola (Bancroft) Lane. She leaves behind several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Gifted in graphic arts, Melanie expressed her creativity through her work and in every space she touched. She had an exceptional sense of decorating and was known for her ability to organize and beautify her surroundings with ease and imagination.
Community service was a meaningful part of Melanie’s life. She volunteered with the American Legion, helped coordinate the restoration of an old, forgotten cemetery, and quietly supported those in need by donating grocery gift cards to the homeless. During the COVID pandemic, she sewed and donated 700 masks to local charities, offering comfort and help during a difficult time.
Melanie and her late husband, Edward, shared a love for classic cars, owning several and enjoying many years as active members of a local car club. She also loved Florida, embracing its sunshine and warmth, and enjoyed traveling and exploring new places.
Melanie will be remembered for her generosity, creativity, and steady kindness. Her influence and the love she shared will be felt by her family for generations to come. Private family services will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest at Bird Cemetery in Locke, NY.
