March 23, 1938 — March 18, 2026

Groton

With deep love and gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Karl F. Stamm, who passed away on March 18, 2026, just days before his 88th birthday. After a period of hospitalization, Karl fought with determination to return home, but ultimately faced complex medical challenges with the same strength and resilience that defined his life.

Karl was born on March 23, 1938, in Groton, New York, to Otto and Karleen Stamm. A lifelong resident of Groton, he remained deeply rooted in the community that shaped him—and that he, in turn, helped shape for generations.

On April 21, 1965, he married the love of his life, Patricia Sherry. Together, they celebrated 60 years of marriage, building a life centered on family and unwavering support for one another.

Karl was a devoted father to Kris (Katrinka), Susie (Mike), and Kari, and a proud and loving grandfather to Kyle, Becca, Ryan (Emilia), Karly (Jake), Maddie, and Gabie. He was also blessed with a great-grandson, Michael, and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of a great-granddaughter. Despite the distance, with family spread across New York, North Carolina, and California, Karl never missed an event, always showing up with pride, encouragement, and love.

Professionally, Karl worked in accounting throughout his career. He served as Treasurer for Farrell Manufacturing, worked in the accounting department at Smith Corona, and spent the majority of his career as Accountant and Treasurer for Empire Soils Investigations. He concluded his professional journey at BCK Architects & Engineers, where he was respected for his integrity, reliability, and steady guidance.

From a young age, Karl had a passion for sports. As a three-sport athlete at Groton Central School, he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. His love of athletics remained a lifelong constant, whether playing in softball, bowling, and golf leagues, coaching Little League, or cheering on his beloved Boston Red Sox. He especially cherished trips to Florida for Spring Training and attending games in Boston, including the unforgettable experience of sitting atop the Green Monster.

Karl’s dedication to his community was remarkable. He served on village boards and as Mayor for a time. He gave over 20 years of service as a volunteer and trustee for the Groton Rural Cemetery Association. Since 1977, he was a member of the Board of Directors for the First National Bank of Groton, where he also served as Chairman of the Executive Committee and contributed to both the Audit and Loan Committees. He was a proud member of the Groton American Legion following his service in the Army Reserve and a longtime, faithful member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.  He was a retired member of the C.W. Conger Hose Co. # 2 of the Groton Fire Department and a member of Stonehedges Golf Course since its beginnings.

Karl had a rare gift for connection. Known as “Otto” to many lifelong friends dating back to high school, he built lasting relationships across every stage of his life- childhood, career, and community. He was easy to talk to, deeply loyal, and had a way of making everyone feel seen, valued, and special.

In addition to his immediate family, Karl is survived by his brother, Phil Stamm; his sister, Mary Keith; and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony's Church, 312 Locke Road, Groton at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 25 with Father John Gagnier as Celebrant.  Friends may call from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 24 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Avenue, Groton.  Spring interment will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery.

Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, are graciously recommended to the Groton Rural Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 14, Groton, NY 13073, to St. Anthony's Church, 312 Locke Road, Groton, NY 13073, or to Post 800 American Legion, 307 Main St., Groton, NY 13073.  Online condolences may be shared with Karl's family at www.shurtleffservices.com .

Above all, Karl will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His life was defined by showing up for his family, his friends, and his community, and his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
