December 23, 1946 — June 1, 2026

Freeville

John A. "Ian" McCord, 79, of Freeville, passed away at Guthrie Cortland Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on June 1, 2026 after a period of declining health.

Ian was born on December 23, 1946 in Aberdeen, Scotland, and emigrated to the United States at age nine with his late parents, John M. and Isabel (Hay) McCord.

He grew up in Ithaca, graduated from Ithaca High School, and furthered his education at Tompkins Cortland Community College after serving with the US Air Force from 1966-70. Ian retired after a 32-year career as a computer systems analyst with New York State Electric & Gas Corporation.

Ian was a Master Mason, being a 58-year member of the Masonic Order, King Hiram Lodge # 784. An avid hunter, fisherman and trap shooter, he was also a life member and past president of the Lansing Rod & Gun Club and a member of both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Minnesota, where he and Linda had also resided for several years.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda (Mollberg) McCord; his daughters, Sheila Milan (Jeff), of DE, Heather Mount (Jeffrey), of Trumansburg, and Katrinka Jackson (Chuck), of Freeville; and grandchildren: Matthew & Sydney Milan, Elle & Raya Mount, and Brody & Brennen Jackson.  Ian also had a strong extended family and many lifelong friends who we hope will fondly remember him for his sense of humor and love of life.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 8, 2026 at the McLean Community Church. A celebration of life will follow at the Elm Tree Inn. Private burial will be in Minnesota at a later time.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Guthrie who provided day to day care for Ian. He shared a special bond with many of them, which of course means inside jokes and sarcasm.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, are recommended to Ben's Place Senior Dog Sanctuary (information at https://www.bensplaceseniordogsanctuary.com/ ) .

Arrangements are entrusted to the Shurtleff Funeral Home, and online condolences may be shared with Ian's family at www.shurtleffservices.com .
