John Charles Mann, (77), a cornerstone of the Southern Cayuga County community whose life was defined by resilience, mentorship, and an unwavering love for the land and its people, passed away peacefully April 7, 2026.
Born in Ithaca, New York June 27, 1948, John’s roots were firmly planted in the family farm on Bartnick Road in Genoa. While he initially dreamed of a life working that land, his path took a transformative turn while attending SUNY Cobleskill and later Cornell University, where through his studies and a growing desire to give back, he discovered his true calling: To teach.
His commitment to that new path was soon put to the ultimate test. Just four days after his graduation from Cornell in 1970, a spinal cord injury sustained while working a hay field changed the course of John’s life - but it certainly did not alter his spirit. John would spend the next 56 years defining what it means to lead a life of purpose, refusing to let a wheelchair hold him back.
While rehabbing from his injury, John began pursuing his master’s degree at Cornell, eventually earning his teaching accreditation. From there he launched a decorated 26-year career at Southern Cayuga High School, where he didn’t just teach agriculture; he cultivated confidence and character in his students. John helped rebuild the school’s agriculture program and served as a dedicated advisor for the school’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) program, earning accolades and being featured in so many articles that headline writers would affectionately dub his “Man of the Year” awards as “Mann of the Year.”
To John, success wasn’t measured by a high GPA or attending college; it was the work ethic and passion his students carried into their lives. Today, his legacy lives on in thriving farms, businesses, and families in Cayuga County and across the country.
Beyond the classroom and fields, John was the heartbeat and unofficial historian of Southern Cayuga athletics and a proud member of its Hall of Fame. A fixture in the northwest corner of the gymnasium at basketball games, John held court providing encouragement, coaching tips for every passing player, and voiced special appreciation for hard-working defenders. On and off the court, John was a man who encouraged, lived for, and celebrated the accomplishments of others - whether they were his students, his grandchildren, or his many nieces and nephews. In the mid-1980s, auditions for a reliable driver to school and sporting events led John to a plucky Southern Cayuga elementary school teacher who initially proved astute at taking direction from him. While that willingness to entertain John’s constructive feedback did eventually wane, Marilyn Fessler quickly graduated from chauffeur to full-time companion and confidant. They married in 1991, blending their lives and families into a source of profound joy.
John’s superpowers were simple but rare: he listened with love, made every person feel like the center of the universe, and offered guidance that felt like a gift rather than a lecture. He was a great friend, uncle, grandfather, son, brother, husband, teacher, role model, and man. Though John’s spirit and example remain immortal, we will deeply miss his voice.
John is reunited in peace with his parents Claude and Joan Mann; his sister Sally and brother-in- law Richard Anderson; and his lifelong friend, Douglas May.
John’s legacy of strength is carried on by his wife, Marilyn (Fessler) Mann; his daughter, Mari Beth (Andy) VanNostrand; and his beloved grandchildren: Zachary (Emily) VanNostrand, Alyssa (Tanner) Bowditch, and Erica (Michael) Poole. He was the proud great-grandfather to Macy, Austin, Lainey, and his namesake, Wells John, born March 27, 2026. He is also survived by his sisters, Maureen (Jeffrey) Teator, Joanne (Steve) Kopp, and Eileen (Chris) Tyrrell; a special cousin, Marcia Hagin; and nephews and nieces: Richard John Anderson, Matthew Mann (Kelly Baines) Anderson, Patrick John (Liz) Tyrrell, Mark (Krista) Tyrrell, Caitlin (Nick) Mandia, Claire Teator, Hayley (William) Baumgartner, Nathan (Whitney) Kopp, Michael John (Katie) Kopp, Peter (Lisa) Kopp, and Kara (Krishaon) Ewing; and many great-nieces, nephews, and former students (ALL of whom he cherished and whose exploits he closely followed).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to honor John’s legacy of service and education:
