Gary L. McKay, 84, of Groton, passed away on May 7, 2026 at Strong Hospital in Rochester after a brief illness.
Gary was born March 11, 1942 in Cortland, a son of the late Leon and Geneva (Peppin) McKay. A lifelong Groton resident, Gary graduated from Cortland Central School and served with the US Air Force from 1961-1965.
He began his career working for many years at Smith Corona, then afterwards at Ithaca Electric and United Auto Parts, and he later provided customer service at NAPA Auto Parts in Cortland. Gary was active throughout his years in many local organizations, contributing his time and efforts at Carrington-Fuller Post 800 American Legion, Citizens Hook & Ladder Co. # 3 of the Groton Fire Department, the Groton Rod & Gun Club, Eagles Club, and Disabled American Veterans in Cortland. He was also a founding member of the Tri-County Horseshoe Club in Groton.
In addition to horse shoes, he enjoyed bowling, golfing at Stonehedges, camping at Owasco Lake and motorcycling. He was known to enjoy his Schaefer Beer at area spots, including his favorite "watering hole," Argyle's Easy Street. An avid NY Giants fan, he also collected clocks.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy L. (Cook) McKay; children, Rhonda Garrow (Mike) Danette Poznanski (Dave); Jeff Hill (Raine) and Julie Hill (Melissa); grandchildren: Krista Neff (Arthur), Jonathan Garrow (Delany), Emmalee Garrow, Alyssa Garrow, Ryan Garrow, T.J. Talbot (Linsey), and Kellie Talbot (Blake); a sister, Vivian Frink (Gary); several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Ronnie McKay and Kirk McKay; and his sister, Yvonne Spry.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later time. Private interment will be in Groton Rural Cemetery. Per Gary's wishes there are no calling hours.
