Edward V. Murdock

Edward V. Murdock, 86, of Groton, passed away on August 31, 2023 at Upstate University Hospital, Syracuse after a brief illness.

Ed was born September 19, 1936 in Oneonta, NY, a son of the late Willard and Julia (Sigerson) Murdock. He was a Dryden-Groton area resident most of his life and attended Dryden schools. A veteran of the US Army, he was also a Past Chief and Life Member of the W.B. Strong Volunteer Fire Company of the Freeville Fire Department.  He was a self-employed carpenter for many years, and had previously worked at Smith Corona, Freeville Lumber, and for area contractors. He enjoyed planting and selling vegetables, and outdoor activities. He also took much pleasure in playing cards with family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Jane (Shoemaker) Murdock, and his children, Julie Kesler (Greg), of Cortland, and Joseph Murdock (Kristin), of Leesburg, VA. He was a proud grandpa to  Nicholas (Caitlin) & Justin Murdock, and Luke Kesler, and is also survived by his brother, John Murdock (Katie); brother-in-law, Robert Tvaroha, Jr.; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, James Murdock, and his sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and George Moore, Peggy and Donn Harvard, and Mary Tvaroha. 

A graveside interment service with military honors will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 6 in Groton Rural Cemetery.  There are no calling hours. There will be a gathering at the Freeville Fire Dept. for family and friends, following the service.   Contributions, in lieu of flowers, are directed to the American Stroke Foundation (https://americanstroke.org).
