Cheryl “Sherry” Wilson (nee Bower), 71, of Moravia, NY passed away at home on Saturday, March 21, surrounded by loved ones after an extended illness.
Born on December 7, 1954 in Ithaca, NY to Vera and Charlie Bower of Genoa, NY, she was a private, but hardworking and generous woman. To her family, she was the strongest person they knew.
A graduate of Southern Cayuga High School in 1973, she was an accomplished majorette and accordion player.
Sherry graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cayuga Community College’s nursing program in 1978 and spent most of her career caring for the elderly.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Brenda Crowley, and parents.
She is survived by her husband, Karl, daughters Megan Benson and Molly Tratt (AJ), step-daughter Melanie McKeefry and husband Jim, step-son Chad Wilson, and grandchildren Andrea, Juliana, and Alex, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Sherry was particularly talented at crochet and sewing and created many blankets for family and friends, including hats for nicu babies. She was also a good cook. She enjoyed NASCAR, with Darlington being her favorite racetrack, and visiting historical sites and gardens. Her ice cream order, without fail, was a Mexican sundae on soft chocolate, no whipped cream. Her daughters fought over who got the cherry.
An animal lover all her life, in lieu of flowers, consider donating to your local SPCA or the The Renzi Cancer Center at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center.
In keeping with her wishes, a private gathering is planned for this July. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Shurtleff Funeral Home, and online condolences may be shared with Sherry's family at www.shurtleffservices.com .
