Carol M. Swartwood, 88, of Genoa, passed away at home on March 18, 2026 after a period of declining health.

Carol was born on March 20, 1937 in Wolcott, NY, a daughter of the late Frank and Evelyn (Brown) Darling. She was a graduate of Wolcott High School. Carol retired after many years as a cafeteria worker and bus driver for Southern Cayuga Central School District and had also been a cook for the Genoa Hotel.

She raised seven children and was known as the "Granny of Genoa," her mission being to feed everybody and teach others to cook! She loved her pets, and in earlier years enjoyed gardening, road trips, camping and going to Long Point, and taking care of her husband and family.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Robert "Bucky" Swartwood; sons: Michael Frady (Jackie Tyrrell) and Frederick Freary III (Yvonne Alger); daughters: Georgetta Thayer, Phyllis Tanner (Bill Lake), Deborah Wheeler, and Doni-Jo Swartwood (Joseph Parks); a brother, Frank Darling (Deborah); a sister, Evelyn Olear; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, June Kenyon.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Michelle Zirbel Ashley, and a son-in-law, Phil Thayer.

Friends may call from 4:00 - 6:00 PM on Wednesday, March 25 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 10117 State Route 90, Genoa, with a funeral service to follow calling hours at 6:00 PM. Friends and family will gather after the services at Mike and Jackie's home. Spring interment will be in East Venice Cemetery.
