Carina E. Emerson

Carina E. Emerson, 88, of Groton, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2023 at the Groton Community Health Care Center.

Born March 17, 1935 in Homer, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Jeanette (Hilsinger) Jeffery.

Carina grew up in McLean and graduated from Dryden High School, where she was awarded the first GAA (Girls Athletic Association) Trophy. She worked for many years at Smith Corona, both "on the line" in NYS and as a secretary for tech service operations in Illinois. In later years, she assisted at the Groton 5 & 10 Cent Store.

An active Lifetime member of the Post 800 American Legion Auxiliary for many years, she was recognized as one of the top three "Volunteers of the Year" awarded by the Tompkins County Office of the Aging in 2009.  She was an accomplished bowler in the women's leagues at the Corona Club and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She knitted many soft hats for women going through chemotherapy. She also was an avid pitch player for many years.

She is survived by her daughter, Teri Evener (Jeff); son, Scott Marlette (Janeen Orr); and son Rob Marlette (Jan); 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren along with nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Francis "Frank" Emerson; brothers, Harold Jeffery, Jr. and Keith Jeffery; a sister, Arlene Coon; and a grandson, Joshua Marlette.

Private interment will be at Cortland Rural Cemetery.  Friends and family will gather for a celebration of life at Carrington Fuller Post 800 American Legion at 1 PM on July 22, 2023. There are no calling hours.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Groton ALA, Post 800 Kitchen Fund.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Shurtleff Funeral Home.
