Bradley "Brad" L. Griffin

Bradley "Brad" Griffin, 91, of Groton, passed away peacefully at home on February 5, 2024.

Brad was born October 3rd, 1932, in Ossining, NY to Anne Marie LaPeer and Walter Jacob Griffin.  He graduated from Ossining High School in June 1950. He entered active Army service that included 13 months in Korea. His last assignment was as crew chief of the 8057th Air Ground Liaison Unit.  He was later commissioned and transferred to serve as an officer of the United States Naval Reserve.

Before finishing college, he found employment as a janitor, laborer, foreman, bank bill collector, and as a guard at Sing Sing prison.

He attended NYS Teachers College and transferred to Cornell University, from which he graduated in 1961. He began his career with the NYS Conservation Department in the Adirondacks and retired as Regional Supervisor in Central New York with the NYS DEC.

His memberships included The Wildlife Society, The American Fisheries Society and the American Wildlife Research Foundation.  He was a Freemason, a member of Westchester Lodge 180 where his father and grandfather belonged.  He had been a member of the Lansing Lions and a coach in the Lansing Recreation program.  He served on the Park Commission and the Town of Lansing Planning Board.  He had been a competitive rifle and pistol shooter since in Junior Rifle Club and was a past president of The Interstate Pistol Association and had competed at the National Matches.  As a pilot, he had been a member of the East Hill Flying Club and the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association.  He had been a member of the Met and Tri-Cities Opera Guilds.  He was a life member of the Lansing Historical Association and served as Secretary.  He presented programs of history locally and authored articles and was the co-author of “Voices from Connecticut Hill '' with Brumsted and Fischers, published by Cornell Press.

A resident of Lansing since 1970, he was the owner of Highland Harbor Farm whose activities included a Christmas tree plantation and a licensed shooting preserve.

He is survived by his wife D. Juanita Ostrander Griffin; his sons, Pieter Griffin (Meredith) of Hastings, NE and Daniel Griffin (Robyn) of Interlaken, NY; several grandchildren; stepchildren: Donald (Marcia) Slocum, Richard (Kim) Slocum, David (Sarah) Slocum, Dale (Paula) Slocum, Juanita Drake (Matt Bevier); and several additional grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Brad was predeceased in death by his first wife Judith Lutes.

Calling hours will be Monday, February 12th, 2024 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Avenue, Groton, NY, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM, with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 PM. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Groton Rural Cemetery.
